Who We Are
A Distinct Identity
Aging Rainbows is a not for profit, 100% volunteer run organization with no paid employees. We are a collaborative group of like minded individuals from the LGBTQ+ community and allies who are driven by one primary goal, to make the world a better place for all individuals!
Our mission is to provide community outreach, education, supportive programs, foster inclusive care communities and care providers, expand socialization opportunities, and intergenerational programs in the Northern, VA area and throughout the country for LGBT older adults. We want to work with individuals and communities across the country to foster these programs and ideals! We strive to build productive relationships and to make a positive impact with all our pursuits.

Aging Rainbows has a mission to change and positively impact the lives of others, especially LGBT older adults in the Northern, VA area. The work we do is focused on expanding socialization opportunities for LGBT older adults, while supporting intergenerational programs, education, outreach, advocacy, and positive interventions to create more LGBT friendly inclusive care communities and care providers. Along the way we always ensure that our partners share the same vision, and are empowered by creating positive opportunities for all individuals and communities. We are happy to come to community centers, senior centers, churches, and other venues to speak about topics of interests for LGBT older adults and care partners! Aging Rainbows is dedicated to stopping ageism and discrimination! We strive to actively educate, train, and foster inclusive care communities, service, and care providers for LGBT older adults. We provide guidelines and staff education for care communities and care providers on how to create inclusive care communities and services free of charge!
Contact us today to get a copy of our guidelines for creating inclusive care communities and services. In addition, we offer individualized support to LGBT older adults and if needed referrals to care management and advocacy services who specialize in and understand the needs of LBGT older adults.
These service providers can assist with long term care planning, health maintenance, advocacy, and more! We are always striving to make a difference and invite you to learn more and offer your support if you can to these initiatives and areas!

Socialization & Supportive programs
Making Connections and Fostering Friendships!
LGBT older adults need more opportunities for socialization! Our goal is to promote relationships and offer regular activities and fun, interactive socialization opportunities for LGBT older adults!
From our collaborative programs, to uplifting support groups, outings, and pride events, we hope to have something for everyone! With access to the right resources and support, individuals can become empowered by their own abilities, gain the confidence to step out of their comfort zone, form new relationships, and fulfill their potential!

Health and Wellness
We are here for you to guide the way!
Our primary focus is to create safe spaces and inclusive options for all older adults to have hollistic wellness support and access to services.
In our resources section and on our main page you will see many inclusive service providers highlighted - senior living, elder law, relocation, homecare and more!
We strive to offer ease of use in our resources section to allow members of the LGBT older adult community to clearly understand who provides and supports inclusive care and services.
We also have many supportive services, programs, and groups to access virtually and onsite in our programs, news, and events section! You are not alone!
Please reach out via our contacts tab at any time if you require additional support, guidance to move forward, or would like to share your experiences accessing an inclusive care provider.
We provide training free of charge to all service providers who would like to be considered as an inclusive care or service provider. Reach out today if you would like to learn more about this for your organization.
Sage credentialing and incorporating long term inclusive care training programs is also reinforced to all providers after initial aging rainbows inclusive services training.

Dealing with the challenges of today requires movers and thinkers, people of action who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. Aging Rainbows emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a strong desire and a call to action for LGBT older adults! Karen McPhail, RN, BSN, MSN, CCM, CDP, CCTC
Co-Founder and Director
With us since the beginning, Karen McPhail is our Co-Founder, Board Chair, and Co-Director. Karen brings her many years of experience and skills to the forefront in helping our organization to grow and succeed.
Karen is the owner and Managing Director of Eldementals LLC, and is a professional care manager with over 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She has been working since 2001 as a private Healthcare Consultant, Care Advisor, educator, public speaker, writer, and Care Manager in the DC Metro area. She has been educated in the various fields of human services, including case management, psychology and mental health, nursing, pediatrics, and gerontology. She is a professional member of the Case Management Society of America, the National Association of Case Management, the American Society on Aging, the National Council of Dementia Practitioners, the Aging Life Care Association™ (ALCA), ISTAART through the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), the past President of the George Mason Nursing Alumni Association, a past board member of the National Kidney Foundation, has had program involvement with the WRTC and UNOS, a past Director and Founder of the Transplant Institute Foundation, a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honors Society, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Alumni Association, Board member and Restaurant Committee Chair for Dementia Friendly America (DFA) - Herndon which was the first DFA chapter in Virginia and now Fairfax, a Board member of the Women's Club of Great Falls- previously Great Falls Friends and Neighbors, Great Falls Business Women, and has completed certification and credentialing through the Alzheimer’s Association, the National Council of Dementia Practitioners, SAGECare (platinum), as a Clinical Transplant Coordinator, as a certified case manager (CCMC), and is a National Resource Center for LGBT Aging Education Ambassador. Mrs. McPhail has served as adjunct faculty at both Georgetown University and George Mason University Nursing Programs. She has been recognized on several occasions for her community service efforts on behalf of her area. She has published work in the Journal of Nursing Administration and other publications, does private healthcare consulting for a variety of corporations, does frequent public speaking engagements, and serves on expert clinician panels, along with speaking at numerous clinical and community focused education programs, is involved in many local charities and service organizations, authors a wellness blog titled "Eldementals™," which is a blog to support those with chronic conditions of all ages, older adults, and their caregivers, is lead blogger for Aging Rainbows for LGBT older adults, participates in frequent national podcasts, expert panels, and has been featured on WUSA-9, and in other news publications.
Kayley C. McPhail
Co-Founder and Director
Kayley McPhail is our Co-Founder and Co-Director and collaborated creating Aging Rainbows with the vision and drive to improve upon our LGBT Older Adult Community. Kayley is focused on developing the organization through personal experience, past non-for-profit experience, and related work in the field. She has extensively participated in public speaking programs and panels discussing LGBTQ+ topics and affairs. She has published numerous blogs and articles on wellness and the LGBTQ+ community. She has been featured on WUSA-9 and other news publications. Kayley has received academic awards and achievements for her university studies, research, and work in the field of cultural anthropology and languages.
